Kevin Anderson became the first player to win a main draw match at the 2016 Shanghai Rolex Masters when he swept past Chinese wildcard Li Zhe 6-1, 6-3 The tall South African put on a serving clinic, out-acing his opponent 19-1 to win in just over an hour.
However, it was the match on centre court that thrilled the local fans as china’s No.2 player Wu Di scored one of the biggest wins of his career when he upset the 16th seed Pablo Cuevas 6-3, 4-6, 7-6. Despite a difference of 165 spots in their rankings, the match was a tight seesaw affair with numerous momentum swings. The final round of qualifying was played with Mischa Zverev, older brother to NextGen star Alexander Zverev, surviving eleven aces from Ryan Harrison in a thrilling three-set match to move into the main draw. Also making it through qualifying was 18-year-old Taylor Fritz, the youngest player at this year’s Shanghai Rolex Masters, defeating Australia’s John Millman 6-4, 6-2.
The remain players to reach the main draw from qualifying were Mikhail Youzhny, Yuichi Sugita, Kyle Edmund, Lukas Rosol and Vasek Pospisil.
On the Grandstand, fans were treated to play by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga partnering Nenad Zimonjic in a doubles first-round match as they took on Olympic medallist Steve Johnson and Sam Querry of the USA; the French-Serbian advanced 6-4, 6-4.
Day two action will see both Zverev brothers in action, Alexander (Sascha) taking on John Isner and Mischa plays China’s Ze Zhang, Tsonga faces Florian Mayer, Ivo Karlovic will be crancking his massive serve as he plays Pospisil and Viktor Troicki takes on Rosol.
